TRANSFER
Transfer is a technique where the symbolic meanings and feelings the object or person generates are ‘transferred’ to another object or person to promote an idea. This poster from 1968 during the cultural revolution of china is a perfect example of transfer. A sun has been used throughout history to symbolise greatness, divinity and power. These symbolisms are then transferred to Mao’s portrait on the center of the sun, thereby the poster suggests that Mao is great and powerful. Furthermore, the sun being the energy source of our earth, the poster also implies that Mao is crucial to China and is someone they must have as a leader. Moreover, the caring, warm and loving emotion of the sun is transferred on to Mao portraying him as a humane leader. Clearly, the positive connotations of the sun has been transferred to Mao Ze Dong and has portrayed him as an almost god-like figure.
